Yorkie, Poodle or Shih Tzus are all great toy dogs and they are usually playful unless they are sick or they are just very mellow in personality. More often than not they are playful though. I say keep your options open on the breed and just look around at shelters and breeders if you prefer to spend more and pick the individual puppy/dog that you like. It will give you a great feeling to rescue a dog from a shelter and many times, you can get a puppy from there too, purebreed ones nonetheless and the price is always good.
Another note: Poodles (#2 on the intelligence list) are known for their intelligence hence they need more attention and more mental stimulation. Yorkies are #29 on the intelligence list I believe and Shih Tzu is somewhere further down so depending on your lifestyle and how muc h mental stimulation you may be able to provide them, you may want to take that in to consideration.
Good luck to you in searching for a dog
I have a male Yorkie myself and my sister owns a female Maltese…somehow it turns out that males are more sucky, less bossy and playful than females.
get a male, since you want a playful one.
see generally, males are little more affectionate and loving than females. i own a female though… LOL i love everyone of them
Get a poodle. my cousin has one.
Poodles are known for being a wee bit vicious but it really depends on their personality.
I say google breeders for certain breeds then visit the breeder to see the dogs.
It might be a little expensive but definately worth it if you want a specific personality.
i personally don’t like shih tzus…
so for me, ither yorkie or poodle.
If you are unsure which breed would best suit your lifestyle, I would suggest researching the pros and cons of each first. Visit some breeders and interact with their dogs. (Breeders actually LOVE it when people do this…it indicates that they are trying to make the right decision instead of an impulse buy.)
While you are researching and weighing your options, save your money so that you can afford one. Breeding ethically is expensive. Breeders have costs invested that they have to try to cover by charging for the dogs they place.
Most toy breed dogs are a little on the pricey side because of their high demand. Yorkies run in the 1000’s most of the time and Poodle’s in the high hundreds and 1000’s. I am not sure about Shitzu but I would assume the same. I would suggest going to animal planet or googleing facts about the 3 different breeds. Some breeds are better with one companion versus families, one might be better with kids then the other. One may be a higher energy breed then the other. Looking up these facts will help you make the right decision for you! I hope this helps.
I don’t know if you would consider it a “Toy dog” but Cocker Spaniels are great dogs. They are very cute (my personal opinion) they are very playful and when you are done playing they will sit in your lap (if you want them to) and they love to be pet. They are easy to train if you start when they are puppies but they aren’t hard to train when they are older. I had a Cocker that I had train to get into it’s cage when I wanted it to go in. I would simply say “go get in your cage” and she would go straight to it and wait for you to come close the door. and she wouldn’t get out no matter how long you waited. The best dog I ever had was a Cocker Spaneil. Hope this helps.
I have a toy poodle! She is the most loyal, beautiful, smartest dog I have ever had. I got her when I was 4 and now I’m 14. I would really, really recommend a toy poodle! She is also very playful and is great with children.
Check your local pound or shelter, or even the vet. You can usually get pets fairly cheap at those places. The animals at those places also need a good home and love. Shelter pets are usually some of the sweetest!
you should get a shih tzu. i currently own one. theyre very sweet dogs with a great personality. u can play with them like a big dog or cuddle up to them at night. they are very cute and whenever i go on a walk, my shih tzus fur blows up around his face and u can see his huge eyes. at least 5 ppl tell me that he is adorable. ginger (my puppy) is very loyal and will wait for me until i get home from school by the door. he constantly wants to be by me. hes a very good guard dog and has an amazing bark for sumthing so small. hes very strong and has the personality of a bigger dog in a tiny package.
all in all, i think shih tzus are great dogs with wonderful personalities
thats why i think u should get one, and if u do i swear it will be an unforgettable memory. these dogs are truly magnificent and beautiful inside and out.
I have a malipoo (Maltese and poodle mix) they are so playful and loving (great with kids, too). I got mine at “Vanity Pups” which I dont think is global (its only in new york). You might wanna look around for them.

ADOPTION. The animal shelters are over run with dogs. They have every shape and size. right now they are not charging for adoptions. They will be spayed/neutered UTD on all shots.Plus you will feel good about saving a life instead of spending money.
Please……………do the right thing. You will be putting money in a puppy mill if you purchase a puppy.
i was stuck between a yorkie and a shihtzu, but i got a shih tzu, mainly because i found one for a better price, prices for yorkies are WAY up there..
Check your local SPCA. They can answer most questions and provide you with an affordable toy breed that really needs a home.
Yeah you can get a Doberman..
They’re playful and adorable
Bichon Frise’s are a playful breed! :]
